With the coming of spring and the messes that ensue with outdoor play, and learning all about rainbow fun with my easy rainbow slime recipe, I was so glad to find these PURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes! They even worked on my first failed attempt at rainbow slime, and were able to remove even the stickiest mess – white school glue based slime with starch (BTW – do not attempt to make liquid starch at home for a slime recipe – it doesn’t work). Phew!

FREE Rainbow Printables and Easy Rainbow Slime Recipe

I designed the rainbow printables in this post to make it easy for parents and teachers to make for some extra-sensory play time. You can either create the slime recipe I’ve included here or you can use these printables (once laminated) as play doh mats or even with write-on, wipe-off markers to teach kids about the colors of the rainbow. Here you can see my three-year-old putting his blue slime where the blue color is on the rainbow heart printable. This entire slime exercise led to hours of playtime fun for my kids over the course of a few days. I stored our slime in up-cycled plastic containers.

Tutorial: How to Make Rainbow Colored Slime with my Easy Slime Recipe

To make one color of slime you will need:

• 1 Cup of water (tap water is ok) – divide this into two 1/2 cupportions located in separate containers
• 1/2 Teaspoon of powdered borax (you can find this in the laundry aisle at Walmart)
• 4 oz. of school glue – you can use white, clear or glitter glue for this recipe
• 1/2 Teaspoon gel food coloring
• 1 Canister ofPURELL® Hand Sanitizing Wipes – perfect for cleaning up messes!

If you plan to make multiple colors feel free to double or quadruple this recipe – just keep careful track that the ratio is 1 Cup Water, 1/2 Teaspoon borax, and 4 oz. of school glue + coloring for each color you plan to make.

If you research slime recipes you’ll see a variety of measurements for the water portion of creating slime. Just know that you may have some excess liquid remaining once your slime gels. Feel free to toss any excess liquid once you get a big jelly goop of slime. I tried a few different slime recipes (some using liquid starch) before deciding that I prefer this version with borax as the congealing agent.

Step 1 – Divide the 1 Cup of Water into two containers. Each container should hold 1/2 Cup of Water.

Step 2 – Take one of the 1/2 Cups of water and add the 1/2 Teaspoon of borax and stir until the borax is dissolved. If not all the crystals dissolve, not to worry, the recipe will still work. This photo was taken before I mixed the Borax into the water.

Step 3 – Get a large mixing bowl and empty 4 oz. of white school glue into the mixing bowl. My boys love to help me create recipes!

Step 4 – Add the other (borax free) 1/2 Cup of Water to the mixing bowl with the white school glue. Stir until well combined. When fully mixed you should have a watery glue.

Step 5 – Add approximately 1/2 Teaspoon of gel food coloring to the water and glue mixture. You’ll want this to be mixed in throughly during this step to prevent staining on hands and clothes from the food coloring.

Step 6 – Once the food coloring and glue with water are throughly mixed, you can pour in the 1/2 Cup Water with 1/2 Teaspoon of borax dissolved in it into the food coloring and glue mixture. Here you can see the glue mixture starting to congeal as soon as the borax/water combination hits it.

It doesn’t take long to see an almost magical response from the slime! It instantly congeals.

Step 7 – Once the mixtures have been combinedthroughly with a spoon or fork, they form a big blob. It is safe for children to massage the blob with their hands and to create a big ball of rainbow slime. Keep scrolling down for extended play using the free rainbow printables!
