Dead Space Remake Chapter 1 Walkthrough (2024)

This guide will tell you how to complete Chapter 1: New Arrivals of the Dead Space Remake. This is essentially the tutorial level of the game and you can expect things to get far more horrifying than this.

This guide is for the Dead Space Remake, released in 2023!

Author’s Note: Screenshots used in this guide were taken in a New Game Plus. I’ll have access to upgrades that a fresh game save would not have access to. The text is constructed to aid and help a new player.

Starting Out

For the first part of Chapter 1, you’ll be watching a cinematic of the USG Kellion’s crew talking about their mission. You have Chief Security Officer Zach Hammond, Security Officers Chen and Johnston, Computer Specialist Kendra Daniels, and Ship Systems Engineer Isaac Clarke.

After crash landing into the USG Ishimura, the crew will make their way to the flight lounge and find it in a state of disrepair. Hammond will direct Isaac to go to a nearby console for ship diagnostics. Head through the door into the room with the computer consoles and interact with the one at the end.

Isaac will inform the crew that the Ishimura is in a very bad state only for the room to have a quarantine lockdown. Necromorphs attack the crew and attack them with Chen as the first fatality.

Necromorphs will begin to pop out of the vents near you, you just have to RUN. Go through the door to your right and don’t stop running until you find an elevator at the end of the hallway. Quickly interact with the elevator panel to get out.

Once you’re out, you’ll find a table with a bright yellow light. If you get close enough, you’ll see that this light is a Plasma Cutter. Pick it up to proceed, this will be the first weapon you’ll be able to pick up.

Head towards the door where you hear someone begging for help. There will be a glowing purple fuse box wired to the door. Destroy the fuse box by punching it or shooting it. This is a mechanic you’ll need to keep in mind for the future as these boxes pop up in numerous instances.

This is where you’ll fight your first necromorph. Start by shooting off one of its legs then an arm. Typically a leg and an arm will be enough to down most Slasher necromorphs but sometimes you’ll need to shoot off more limbs.

Your Plasma Cutter will have two fire modes, vertical shot and horizontal shot. You can toggle these with your secondary fire button. Horizontal is best used for legs while you can use vertical or horizontal for shooting off the arms afterwards.

Keep walking through the halls until you find the Tram Control Room. You’ll have some dialogue between Isaac, Hammond, and Kendra. You’ll learn that the Ishimura’s tram system is down so it’ll be down to Isaac to repair it.

While you’re in the Tram control room, look for the Save Station. Use these stations to save your game throughout your playthrough. It’s generally good practice to do so whenever you find one or resupplied so you don’t lose too much progress should you need to wait for another time to play.

Replacing the Damaged Tram

Your first objective is to replace the Damaged Tram. Using your Locator button, you can have Isaac emit a blue, holographic line that tells him where to go. Be sure to use this often as this will lead you to your mission objective!

Follow the Locator until you’re in the Tram Tunnels. You’ll see a blue light at the end of the path which will be the Stasis Module. This module will allow you to slow down entities such as enemies and objects significantly.

Near the Stasis Module you’ll find a Stasis Recharge station. Use these throughout the ship to recharge your Stasis Module for free. Finding Stasis Packs or buying them from the store can get expensive so use your Stasis sparingly and refill at these stations whenever you can.

Use Stasis on the malfunctioning door to slow it down, granting you time to run past it. Don’t take too long as this door can crush you if the Stasis effect wears off. Once you make it to the Tram Repair Room, you’ll find this blue locker on the wall to your right.

These blue lockers contain an object called a Power Node. Power Nodes are found throughout Dead Space and are used to upgrade your equipment such as your suit and weapons. To replace the tram, you’ll need to interact with the primary console to open the shutters. Use the two side panels to extend the claws that will grab the damage tram shuttle. Start with the claw console to the left of the main console, near the door you came in from.

The one to the right of the console is broken and will only hold onto the shuttle for a second before retracting. When the claw extends and grabs onto the shuttle, use Stasis on it and run back up to the main console to use it before the Stasis wears off.

This will replace the damaged tram so now you’ll need to return to the Tram Control Room.

Finding and Replacing the Data Board

Your next goal is to find a spare Data Board to repair the Tram Controls. Once you’ve made your way back to the Tram Control Room after repairing the Tram Shuttle, follow your locator’s path. Eventually you’ll run into this contraption at the end of the hall.

This is a Circuit Breaker and you’ll be seeing more of these throughout the game. How they work is that when you interact with them, you can find how much power is available at the top of the panel and where you can allocate that power to. For this circuit breaker, you can power one of two doors. Start off by applying power to the Cargo Hall Storage.

Follow the blue line down the hall and it will lead you to the Cargo Hall Storage room. Whenever you find a circuit breaker, you can typically follow the blue line to see what exactly it is powering.

If you go inside the storage room, you’ll find a power node and an item known as a semiconductor. Semiconductors are valuable items that you can sell for thousands of credits at a store. Head back to the circuit breaker and power the door to the Maintenance Bay. The Maintenance Bay acts as your introduction to Ishimura’s more open spaces. While it can be nice to feel less claustrophobic, open areas can be especially dangerous as you can be more easily surrounded by necromorphs.

Throughout the Maintenance Bay you’ll find explosive canisters that you can shoot. Shoot these when necromorphs walk by them to blow them up and save on ammo.

Follow your locator to go up an elevator to get to the higher level. As you’re walking towards a circuit breaker at the end of the path, you’ll find a necromorph playing dead. Shoot its legs off and defeat it to proceed. Now you’ll learn a new fun mechanic in the Dead Space Remake.

This circuit breaker has three power options but is only capable of powering two of those three options. You can power the lights, the elevators, or the maintenance office door. Obviously, you need to power the elevators to get back down, and the Maintenance Office houses the data board. This leaves you to turn off the lights to proceed.

I refer to these circuit breakers as “Pick Your Poison” circuit breakers. Sometimes you’ll have to choose to go without a convenience like air, lights, gravity, etc. It depends on the particular circuit breaker but this is one of those. Be aware of your surroundings and listen for any movement of necromorphs.

Head down the elevator and go into the Maintenance Office. Inside you’ll find the Data Board on top of a desk near the entrance. You can also find a Bench in this room which you can use to upgrade your equipment. Head back to the Tram Control Room and interact with the console towards the back of the room to replace the Data Board.

Go to the primary console near the windows to restart the Tram System and send Hammond and Kendra on their way!

Going back to the Kellion

Hammond will order you to return to the Kellion to prepare it for launch. Head back up the elevator and make your way back to the Flight Deck and reach the Kellion.

A cutscene will play where Isaac talks to Johnston and asks for a Diagnostics Report. Interact with the panel to bring up the report but you’ll instead find that the ship’s Singularity Core is under attack.

Johnston will go towards the core and open fire on the necromorphs. If you shoot your weapon or wait long enough, the Kellion will blow up with Johnston in it. Fortunately for Isaac, he’ll be blown out of the ship’s canopy and onto the walkway.

Now you’ll get to fight some Leaper necromorphs for the first time! These necromorphs are very nimble and attack by leaping at you, hence the name. Just shoot off the arms and you’re good. If you’re ever at a good position to shoot off their tail, do so to immediately dispatch them.

Getting to the Medical Deck

With the loss of Johnston and the Kellion, Hammond will mourn the loss before ordering you to head to the Medical Deck to retrieve the Captain’s RIG. During the video call, Hammond and Kendra will cut off communications as they were being attacked by a Slasher. This Slasher was no other than Chen as Hammond points out.

Follow your locator to reach the Flight Deck’s Tram Station. You’ll be unable to use the Tram for the time being but you can go shopping at the Store Kiosk nearby. These Stores are where you can buy goods such as ammo, health packs, and new RIG suits.

You’ll also be able to go through your inventory here where you can sell or store items. You will be unable to sell your weapons unlike the original game but this is a change for the better. If you have spare med packs and stasis packs, it wouldn’t hurt to store them here for later. Though if you’re confident, you can sell these for some money.

You can purchase a Level 2 suit for more inventory space and armor for 10,000 credits. If you’ve been picking up credits and exploring around, you should have enough to purchase it. You may need to sell a couple of things but it’s well worth getting now.

Follow your locator and you’ll find a Bench near a cargo lift. Go down the lift and follow the path until you reach this area. You have now completed Chapter 1: New Arrivals.
